Poem by Albert Laighton

The Lengthening Day

The days are growing longer now;
On yonder elm-tree's topmost bough,
On the gilded cross that crowns the spire,
More slowly burns the sunset's fire;

And at my window, day by day,
I later wait to see the ray
Of the evening star in glory shine
Above yon dim and lonely pine.
