Poem by Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce

Adair Welcker, Poet

The Swan of Avon died—the Swan
Of Sacramento'll soon be gone;
And when his death-song he shall coo,
Stand back, or it will kill you too.

"The Swan of Avon" was the name Ben Jonson gave to Shakespeare.

Writer Adair Welker, the self-proclaimed "Sacramento Shakespeare" was a longtime victim of Bierce's satire.
