Poem by Louisa Sarah Bevington

Valuation

WHO shall tell the song its value:
Critic ear, or heart of friend?
Who shall weigh your love's completeness?
Who shall test the gold you spend?

Not to critic take your poem,
Not to mintsman take your gold,
Not to idol take your worship,
If its worth you would be told.

Sing your music to the singer
Would you be entirely heard;
So your little tune be worthy,
He will know it; take his word.

Show your coin to any miser
If its metal you would prove;
Ask the heart of any lover,
He will tell you if you love.
