Matthew Prior (Мэтью Прайор)

A Reasonable Affliction

On his death-bed poor Lubin lies:
His spouse is in despair;
With frequent cries, and mutual sighs,
They both express their care.

"A different cause," says Parson Sly,
"The same effect may give:
Poor Lubin fears that he may die;
His wife, that he may live."

Matthew Prior's other poems:
  1. An Ode - Presented to the King, on His Majesty's Arrival in Holland, after the Queen's Death
  2. A Song (In vain you tell your parting lover)
  3. An Ode - Inscribed to the Memory of the Hon. Colonel George Villiers
  4. A Lover's Anger
  5. If Wine and Music Have the Power
