Poem by John Heywood

Of Foreknowledge

Foreknowledge of things that must fall
To man, I think it were not best.
The foreknown ill to man would call
Forefelt grief of foreknown unrest.
By foreknown good, to man were ceast
Sweet sudden joy, which evermore
Cometh when joys come unknown before.
